William Allen Murray

Mr. William Allen Murray, 64, of Pulaski died Feb. 2, 2010, at Hillside Hospital.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a veteran of the United States Army.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Matilda Kimbrough Murray.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at First United Methodist Church, Pulaski with the Rev. Wayne Davis officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 3-8 p.m. at Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations are suggested to First United Methodist Church Capital Maintenance Fund, Big Brothers American Legion Post 60 or First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Aymett Murray of Pulaski; sons, Frank Murray, John Murray and wife Julie and Robert Murray, all of Pulaski; grandchildren, Joseph Murray and Jesse Murray of Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia O. Franklin

Miss Virginia O. Franklin, 81, of Ardmore, Ala., died Feb. 2, 2010.

The Ardmore, Ala., native was born April 20, 1928. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Bernard and Dorothy Ozell Shannon Franklin

Survivors include sister Geneva Bowden and husband Gene of Ardmore, Ala.; and several cousins.

Shelby Lofton II

Mr. Shelby Lofton II, 54, of Minor Hill died Feb. 1, 2010, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

He was born Jan. 18, 1956, in Louisiana and was a retired X-ray technician.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Shelby Sr. and Goldie Ray Kelly Lofton.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ellen Marie Thompson Southerland

Mrs. Ellen Marie Thompson Southerland, 78, of Lewisburg died Feb. 8, 2010, at St. Thomas Hospital (Alive Hospice).

A native of Giles County, she is preceded in death by her parents, Altmon (Tinker) and Lillie Pearl Daly Thompson; husband, William Bruce Southerland to whom she was married for 57 years; son Gary Paul Southerland; brothers, Tillman Thompson and Alton Thompson; sisters, Louise Wood and Francis Beard; grandson William Bradley Southerland; and granddaughter Rhonda Denise Fuller.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Banks of Giles County, Betty Jo Fuller and Lawanda Fralix, both of Lewisburg; three sons, Robert Houston Southerland, Charles Dickie Southerland and William Edward Southerland, all of Lewisburg; stepson William Henry Southerland of Athens, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Cindy Gibbs, 45, of Ardmore, Tenn., died Feb. 7, 2010.

She was born Nov. 8, 1964, in Huntsville, Ala., and was a member of Taft Full Gospel church.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony Keith Gibbs of Ardmore, Tenn.; her parents, Harold D. and Edith Durham Boggs of Kelso; sons, David Harold Boggs of Columbia and Dylan Kyle Gibbs of Ardmore, Tenn.

Mamie Landers Sfero

Mrs. Mamie Landers Sfero, 94 of Madison, Ala., died Feb. 7, 2010, at Huntsville Hospital.

She was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Decatur, Ala., She is preceded in death by her parents, John M. and Lena Tuck Landers; husband Benny Sfero; and grandson Darrell Landman

Survivors include her son, Gordon Landman Jr. and wife Jeanette (Brewer) of Madison, Ala.; brother Melvin Landers of Athens, Ala.; sister Naomi Landers Turner of Gadsden, Ala.; granddaughter Lesa Preston of Harvest, Ala.; six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia C. Miller

Mrs. Virginia C. Miller, 66, of Pulaski died Feb. 6, 2010, at NHC HealthCare of Pulaski.

She was retired from Red Stone Arsenal.

She is preceded in death by her parents, J.C. and Vera Mayo Royals.

Funeral services were held Feb. 8 at Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home with Earl Holder and Kevin Bozarth officiating. Burial was in the Bellview Cemetery, Madison County, Ala.

Survivors include her husband, James Miller of Pulaski; sons, Don Miller and wife Donna of Pulaski and Tommy Miller and wife Christina of Toney, Ala.; brother Franklin Royals of South Carolina; three half-sisters; grandchildren: Jessica Miller, Melissa Miller, Elizabeth Miller; and one great-grandson.

Mary E. Fogg

Mrs. Mary E. Fogg, 91, of Ardmore, Tenn., died Feb. 6, 2010.

She was born May 25, 1918, in Blanche. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Effie Hicklen Smith; husbands, Smith Fogg and Bunyan Smith; sons, James Terrell Smith, Jimmy Ross Smith and Douglas Smith; daughter Reba Jane Smith; brothers, Cecil Smith, TC Smith; and sister Irene Hargrove; and three grandchildren, James Dwight Smith, Terry Lynn Smith and Tambra Jane Gates Graviet.

Survivors include son Jerry (Donny) Smith and wife Evelyn of Minor Hill; daughters, Brenda Clark and husband Bobby of Athens, Ala., and Gerelda Gates and husband Hank; brothers, Floyd Wayne Smith and Robert Smith, both of Ardmore, Ala.; eight grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Lewis Clifton Drake

Mr. Lewis Clifton Drake, 91, died Feb. 5, 2010, at The Bordeaux Long Term Care Facility in Nashville.

He was a native of Giles County, a deacon at Mount Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, a veteran of the United States Army and a retiree of LeMar Shirt Company.

He was married to the former Annie (Louise) Yokley Martin for 63 years and an avid fisherman, hunter and a very good gardener.

A funeral service will begin at noon, Friday, Feb. 12, at the Greater Richland Creek Missionary Baptist Association Central Building, Bledsoe Road in Pulaski following a visitation from 11 a.m.-noon. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

The family also will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, at The Rose of Sharon Funeral Service Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Olivet Baptist Church through SunTrust Bank.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four children, Martha Gunning and husband Daniel of Willingboro, N.J., Jerome Drake and wife Maxine of Murfreesboro, James Allen Drake of Pulaski and Rose Mary Glispie and husband Stephen of Glenwood, Ill.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bobby V. Chapman

Mr. Bobby V. Chapman, 76, of Brentwood died Feb. 4, 2010.

A longtime resident of Brentwood, Mr. Chapman was an exceptional businessman and owner of Brentwood Computer Supplies.

He was a near perfect husband who loved his family and the University of Tennessee football and Lady Vol athletics.

Funeral services were held Feb. 8 in the chapel of Brentwood-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane Bass Chapman; children, Sheila C. Harrison and husband David, Perry Lee Chapman and wife Deborah and Amy Chapman; and grandchildren: Natalie Harrison, Matt Harrison, Clint Chapman, Samuel Chapman and Abby Acuff-Chapman.

Barbara Jane Nipper

Miss Barbara Jane Nipper, 80, of Knoxville died Feb. 1, 2010, in Jacksonville, N.C.

She was born on Christmas day in 1929. She was a lifelong resident of Knoxville and member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Rebecca Nipper.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6 in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Deron Cobb officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Mr. Douglas Crowder Hughes, 45, of Lawrenceburg died Feb. 9, 2010, at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg.

A native of Lawrenceburg, he was employed by HLH Express and a member of First Baptist Church Lawrenceburg.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Calvin Crowder; and paternal grandparents, Douglas and Readus Hughes and Mary Charlyn Hughes.

Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at First Baptist Church with Jeff Vanlandingham officiating. Burial was in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens, Lawrenceburg.

Mr. Charles (Boll Weevil) Witt, 72, of Dellrose died Feb. 8, 2010, at Hillside Hospital.

He was a member of Elkton Methodist Church, retired from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and a farmer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Brandon and Ethel Wilkinson Witt; and sister Willa Witt Zwaschka.

Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at Elkton Methodist Church with the Rev. John Ives and the Rev. Richard Garlen officiating. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Charity Franks Potts, 91, of Ethridge died Feb. 11, 2010, at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.

A native of Hardin County, she was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Nona Tilley Franks; and husband Freddie Eugene Potts.

Funeral services were held Feb. 13 at Neal Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg, with Marvin Potts and Lee Kedrie officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Cemetery in Giles County.

Mrs. Chrysteen Renee Flynn, 38, of Frankewing died Feb. 12, 2010.

Graveside services were held Feb. 15 at Hereford-Story Cemetery in Lincoln County. An additional memorial service will be held at a later date.

Survivors include son Joshua Flynn of Frankewing; mother Sandra Watkins of Frankewing; brother Tim Watkins and wife Patsy of Pulaski; and aunt Diane Hayes of North Carolina.

Mrs. Shirley Stubblefield, 73, of Frankewing died Feb. 13, 2010, at Lincoln Care Center in Lincoln County.

The Lincoln County native was a seamstress for Blue Ridge Shirt Plant and of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by Joseph Wiley (J.W.) and Ludie Reed Graham; and brother Randal Graham.

Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with Monty Franklin officiating. Burial was in Wright’s Cemetery.

Herbert Lee McNeese

Mr. Herbert Lee McNeese, 86, of Pulaski died Feb. 13, 2010, at NHC HealthCare of Pulaski.

He was a retired preacher for Puncheon Church of Christ and a member of East Hill Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dudley and Lochie Pierce McNeese; and his wife, Inez McNeese.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the chapel of Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home with Brandon Britton officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3-7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the funeral home.

Thelwood A. Gaines

Mr. Thelwood (Pappy) Alexander Gaines, 76, of Dickson died Feb. 13, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 28, 1933, in Limestone County, Ala., and graduated from Beech Hill High School in 1951. He spent two years in the U.S. Army before enrolling in David Lipscomb College, from where he graduated with a degree in business.

Mr. Gaines retired in 1997 from Equifax after working as an auditor for 30-plus years. Afterward, he became a master gardener and tomato grower extraordinaire.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Hardiman Gaines; wife Annette Poarch Gaines; brother Dupree Gaines; sisters, Margarete Rutledge, Lou Noah and Jackie Callahan; and son Tommy Hamill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Taylor Funeral Home with Mike Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Dickson County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today (Tuesday) and from 10 a.m. to service time on Wednesday.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Alive Hospice, American Cancer Society, Bellevue Baptist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Marguerette Carvell, 84, of Pulaski died Feb. 13, 2010, at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Stella Short Collier; three sisters; and a brother.

Funeral services were to have been held today (Tuesday) at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with Allen Barrett officiating. Burial was to have been held in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Mrs. Margie Mildred Green, 88, of Ardmore, Tenn., died Feb. 14, 2010, at Ardmore on Main Car and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a member of the Pentecostal church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Spry Funeral Home in Athens, Ala., with Donald Clem and Rick Craft officiating. Burial will be in Gatlin Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nancy Lee Fralix, 74, of Lynnville died Feb. 15, 2010, at Hillside Hospital in Pulaski.

The Giles County native was born May 19, 1936.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Nancy Henson Wright; and her husband, Walter Houston Fralix.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lynnwood Cemetery.

Visitation is today (Tuesday) from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lucy Lurline Watts Shrader

Mrs. Lucy Lurline Watts Shrader, 79, of the Rose Hill community died Feb. 9, 2010, at Hillside Hospital in Pulaski.

The Giles County native was born Feb. 6, 1931.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James (Boss) H. Shrader; parents Charlie Calvin and Rosie Bell Norman Watts; and brothers, Robert (Bodie) Watts, Buford (Webb) Watts, Charlie Watts Jr. and Charles Calvin Watts.

Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Burial was in Watts Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include sons, Jimmy Shrader and Harlie Shrader, both of Pulaski; daughters, Deborah Shrader Jackson and Vickie Shrader Burdette, both of Pulaski; brother Charlie Watts; sisters, Lou Ella Womble and Ida Bell Shrader; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Lorene Blakely

Mrs. Mary Lorene Blakely, 93, of Toney, Ala., died Feb. 14, 2010.

She was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Lineville, Ala. She is preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Eloise McCollum Knight; husband Thomas Estes Blakely; brother Eldron Knight; and sister Mauvalene Jones.

Survivors include son Doug Blakely and wife Debbie of Toney, Ala.; daughter Annette Zirbel and husband Sonny of Athens, Ala.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Rabon Wales, 69, of Elkmont, Ala., died Feb. 16, 2010.

He was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Athens, Ala. He is preceded in death by his parents Foster and Audrey Martin Wales; daughter Tammy Murphy; and grandson Cody Murphy.

Survivors include his wife Anita Watkins Wales of Elkmont; son Greg Wales and wife Tracy of Athens, Ala.; two daughters, Deborah Wales of Elkmont and Susan Penn and husband Larry of Prospect; two brothers, Billy Wales and wife Judy and James Wales, all of Elkmont; two sisters, Betty McCurry and husband Randy and Rebecca Brewer, all of Elkmont; grandchildren, Chris Johnson, Ashley Rodgers, Haley Penn, Lacey Penn, Clint Penn, Chelsea Murphy, Layla Davis, Jessi Cates and Cole Wales; and two great-grandchildren.

Knox Davis Surles

Mr. Knox Davis Surles, 82, of Columbia died Feb. 16, 2010, at Maury Regional Medical Center.

The Giles County native was retired from Lee-Mar Shirt Company and as a farmer. He was a graduate of Giles County High School.

Mr. Surles was a member of Cool Springs Church of Christ in Pulaski and faithfully attended West End Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy Sr. and Della Davis Surles; four brothers, Lee Roy Surles Jr., Grady Surles, Sam Surles and Thomas (Bud) Surles; and step-son Jesse Alison Pilkinton.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18 at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Minister Rick Elsey officiating. Burial was in Giles Memory Garden.

Jamie William Bird

Jamie William Bird, 43, of White House died Feb. 16, 2010.

Formerly of Pulaski, he was a 1984 graduate of Richland High School.

Mr. Bird was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and employed by the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Northridge Church in White House.

Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Northridge Church. Burial was in White House Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to an education trust that has been set up for Reagan Bird at Region’s Bank. Cole and Garrett Funeral Home, White House, is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Dana Snelbaker Bird; daughter Reagan Elizabeth Bird; parents Larry and Martha Bird of Pulaski; and brother Joshua Forrest Bird.

John Phillip Townsend

Mr. John Phillip Townsend, 47, of Lynnville died Feb. 17, 2010, at Williamson Medical Center in Franklin.

She was the daughter of the late John Samuel and Grace McGee Cathcart and was preceded in death by her husband James Almus Bledsoe.

He was a member of the Giles County Trap Team, serving as assistant coach, of the American Legion, VFW and Giles County Alliance for Veterans.

Charles Hoke Johnson Jr.

Mr. Charles Hoke Johnson Jr., 56, of Pulaski died Feb. 23, 2010, at his residence.

He was born in Southport, N.C., and was reared in Titusville, Fla. Mr. Johnson grew up hunting and fishing in Florida.

He married Carol Johnson in 1988, and they had one daughter, Brandy. The family moved to Tennessee in 2003.

Even after their divorce in 2005, Charlie and Carol were good friends and shared a bond in their love and care for Brandy.

Mr. Johnson was employed as a heavy equipment operator and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

No funeral services are scheduled. In keeping with the deceased’s wishes, his ashes will be scattered along the Natchez Trace.

The family would like to thank his friends, Buster and Shelia Stanford, and Hospice Compassus of Columbia for their services.

Mr. Edward Gailon Holley, 83, of Chapel Hill, N.C., died Feb. 18, 2010, at Croasdaile Village.

He was born Nov. 26, 1927, and reared in Pulaski. After graduating from David Lipscomb College, he earned a master’s degree from George Peabody College and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

From 1951-68, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

He became director of Libraries and professor at the University of Houston in 1962 and in 1972, he was named dean and professor of the School of Library Science of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After serving as dean until 1985, he returned to teaching and was named William Rand Kenan Jr. professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. He also was chairman of the Board of Governors of the UNC Press.

In addition to his teaching, Mr. Holley served in a number of professional positions, including president of the Texas Library Association (1971), president of the American Library Association (1974-75), president of Beta Phi Mu (1985-87) and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Online Computer Library Center. He produced more than 100 books, articles and essays and lectured at numerous universities in the U.S. and abroad.

As one of the most distinguished members of his profession, he received many of the highest awards in the field of library and information science. These include the Melville Dewey Meal, the Joseph W. Lippincott Award, the Association of College and Research Libraries Academic Librarian of the Year Award and the Beta Phi Mu Award. Also, he received Distinguished Alumnus awards from the Peabody Library School of Vanderbilt University and the University of Illinois Graduate School of Information and Library Science.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Abe Brown and Maxie Bass Holley; and his wife, Bobbie Lee Gault Holley.

Graveside services were held with a public memorial service to be held at a future date.

Survivors include his four children, Gailon Holley of Austin, Texas, Jens Holley and wife Mary of Seneca, S.C., Amy Holley and Eric Spitler of Alexandria, Va., and Beth Holley of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Mary Ellen Jones and Lib Holley of Maryville; three grandchildren, Melody Holley, Faith Holley and Julia Ruth; two nieces and two nephews.

William C. Rives

Mr. William C. Rives, 83, of Centerville died Feb. 19, 2010, at Life Care Center of Centerville.

He was born March 2, 1926, in Perrine, Fla., and served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged.

His vocation was a lathe operator. In later years, he resided in Hickman County.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reddick Bowman and Josephine Raulerson Rives; his wife, Christine, who died in 1991; and his son, Chris, who died in 2000.

A graveside service was held March 12 in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCory Lane, Nashville, with the grandsons delivering the eulogy followed by representatives of the United States Armed Forces providing the military salute.

Survivors include daughter Marsha Rives Jackson and husband Ken of Bon Aqua; step-daughter Linda Walters Logsdon and husband David of Nashville; daughter-in-law Juanita Rives of Raymond, N.H.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
